This Week: Oppose NYU2031 and remember the Triangle Fire Victims
NYU 2031 Expansion Press Conference
Please join us on THURSDAY, MARCH 22 at 12 noon at City Hall to urge Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer to vote NO on John Sexton’s bloated plan to expand NYU on the backs of students and workers. This is a plan that exploits the community which has housed NYU since its founding. To date, the university has failed to explain how it this expansion will enhance the education of its students and not jeopardize its own financial stability.
This is a big deal, since it’s the second hurdle in the City’s Uniform Land Use Review Process (ULURP). Last month, Manhattan Community Board 2 unanimously voted “NO” on the plan, so a second consecutive “NO” from Borough President Stringer could deal a serious blow to the plan’s chances before the City’s Planning Commission and the City Council.
Our allies from the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, NYU Faculty Against the Sexton Plan, Occupy Student Debt Coalition, and NYU4OWS will be on hand as well to show Stringer that the plan is just as bad for NYU itself as it is for New York City.
Click here to see the flyer that the GVSHP is distributing in order to promote the rally.
IMPORTANT: Since the rally is inside the gates of City Hall, you will need government-issued photo ID to get inside. Plan to get there at least fifteen minutes before noon to make sure that you get inside in time.
Triangle Fire – 101st Commemoration
On FRIDAY, MARCH 23 at 12 noon, please join public school children, community residents, organizers, scholars, journalists, and activists for the 101st Commemoration of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. The fire, a horrific workplace tragedy, which led to a major growth in union organizing and health and safety laws, took place in what is now NYU?s Brown Building. Meet up at the corner of Washington Place and Greene Street for what always proves to be a very touching and moving event.
