Dear President Hamilton and Provost Fleming:
We stand with the thousand-plus striking GSOC-UAW workers who are fighting for a fair contract that
pays a living wage, provides affordable healthcare, offers better protections for international and
immigrant student workers, and supports working parents. We’re disappointed that New York
University (NYU) has apparently dragged out negotiations for almost a year, as graduate student
workers––living in what was at one point the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic––have continued to
teach, grade, and research.
As we enter a period of economic rebuilding, we want to ensure that New York remains a place where
young people can lead fulfilling lives. That’s only possible if the institutions that draw them here pay a
living wage that helps workers meet their basic needs. We recently approved a state budget that offered
generous support to NYU because we recognize it contributes economically and culturally to New York.
We expect that NYU will in turn support its students and workers.
We add our names to the list of thousands of students, union members, and faculty urging NYU to
return to the table ready to negotiate in good faith with GSOC-UAW workers.
