Statement Condemning White Supremacist Violence & Endorsing the Campus Antifascist Network
GSOC-UAW-Local 2110’s political solidarity committee stands with the U.S.-based Campus Antifascist Network in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and anti-fascist activists who are today in resistance and struggle against a “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
“Unite the Right” is a conglomerate of fascist, white supremacist, Islamophobic, anti- semitic, white nationalist, homophobic, anti-indigenous and xenophobic groups who chanted “Jews shall not replace us” and other vile slurs while marching around the statue of Confederate icon Robert E. Often in the name of ‘free speech,’ these forces seek to use University campuses to recruit students, intimidate faculty, and create an atmosphere of racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-semitism, Islamophobia and fear. We reject the racist, fascist messages of the alt-right. We stand with current faculty and students and other campus community members under their attack. In the face of events today, we redouble efforts to organize on our campuses to defend the most vulnerable there and in the wider society, including Muslims, LGBTQ folks, immigrants, people of color, Jewish-Americans and women. We intend to sponsor workshops, reading groups and rallies throughout the coming academic year to educate and organize against fascism on our campuses.
