Role of Stewards

GSOC’s decision-making body over the next three weeks will transition from the Bargaining Committee to the Assembly of Stewards, made up of 30 elected Head Stewards and an unlimited number of unelected Volunteer Stewards. All stewards will be required to undergo training in grievance procedure so they fulfill their primary role of enforcing the union contract in their departments and across campus. If students encounter unfair working conditions or pay, stewards will guide them through the grievance process and fight for their interests. Stewards also advocate for the needs of graduate workers at-large and lobby NYU to improve its policies and practices beyond those which are guaranteed in the contract. Finally, stewards serve on standing committees, participate in monthly Assembly meetings, organize among graduate workers, form coalitions with other groups on campus or abroad, help manage the distribution of healthcare and childcare funds, and chart the political direction of the union as a whole. Only Head Stewards can vote in the Assembly, but all stewards and members can take part. GSOC-UAW is a democratic, member-run organization. Being a steward is a way to take on additional responsibility and play a formative role in developing our historic union.

Call for Nominations

NOTICE OF NOMINATION AND ELECTION FOR GSOC ASSEMBLY OF STEWARDS

(thirty [30] positions)

April 22, 2015

Nominations are hereby declared open for the GSOC-UAW Local 2110 Assembly of Stewards (thirty [30] positions):

Graduate students eligible to work in the bargaining unit as defined in Article I of the Memorandum of Agreement are automatically nominated for the GSOC-UAW Local 2110 Assembly of Stewards. You need not be working currently in the bargaining unit in order to be nominated.

Eligible members who wish to accept the nomination for one of the thirty (30) Assembly of Stewards positions must indicate their intention in writing by fax, electronic scan (pdf), photograph attachment, or by hand delivery or postal mail of a signed acceptance of nomination for the specified position to: Election Committee, Local 2110/UAW, 256 West 38th Street, Ste. 704, New York, NY 10018, Fax #212 -228-0198, local2110@2110uaw.org to be received no later than 5pm on Friday, May 1, 2015.

Steward positions are assigned to districts pursuant to Article 3H of the Articles of Representation and Elections:

GSAS Humanities and Social Sciences – 8

GSAS Sciences, Technology, and Math – 5

Poly, 2 Metrotech – 4

Poly, 6 Metrotech and 4 Metrotech – 5

Professional Schools (including Steinhardt and Tisch) – 8

For a description of responsibilities of a being a Head Steward, please read more on our website. Also, we will hold meetings on Friday, April 24 at 3pm in the Cafeteria at 6 MetroTech and Tuesday, April 28 time in the afternoon TBA in the Silver Grad Lounge, in which we will answer questions about how the Assembly of Stewards works and what the expectations would be of Head Stewards.

Candidate statements

Each candidate may write and submit a candidate statement of no more than 150 words. These statements will be posted on the GSOC-UAW Local 2110 website. Phone number and email address must be included, but will not be counted toward the 150 words.

It is the responsibility of the candidate to to submit the candidate statement to gsoc.elections@gmail.com. All candidate statements must be received by the time nominations close at 5pm on Friday, May 1, 2015. At this time they will be posted publicly.

Election Dates, Times and Locations

In the event that the number of eligible candidates who accept nomination for the specified position do not exceed the number of open positions in a given district, such candidates will be deemed elected by acclamation and no election will be held.

If more eligible members accept nomination than there are seats in a given district, an election will be conducted with the results decided by simple plurality within the contested district. Sample ballots shall be sent out at least forty-eight (48) hours in advance of the election.

A run-off election for the final position in any given district, if necessary, will be held before the end of the semester. Date and location will be announced by email and the candidates involved will be contacted directly.
